Patrol, Sparks Police Department, Washoe County School Police, UNR Police Department, and the Douglas and Lyon County Sheriff’s Offices.
Costs for this DUI checkpoint are being paid for by a grant from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, Joining Forces Program. The purpose of the program is to educate the driving public in regards to DUI laws, to enforce the community’s no tolerance stance towards impaired driving and to remind people that “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving!”
Historically, the holiday season brings an increase of illegally impaired drivers to the nation’s roadways. This typically causes an increase in accidents involving DUI drivers during this time.
Please remind your audience that if they are drinking any amount of alcohol they shouldn’t drive.
There are a number of options available to them to avoid driving while they are impaired or “buzzed”, such as using a designating a sober driver, public transportation or a taxi service.
This evening, between the hours of 7:00pm and 12:00pm, the Reno Police Department Traffic Division conducted a DUI/Safety Checkpoint on N. Virginia St at the intersection with 15th St.
In all, 907 vehicles were stopped at the checkpoint. Of those stopped, 68 people were issued citations and 8 were arrested. The breakdown is as follows:
-28 drivers and passengers were issued citations for not wearing seatbelts.
-4 drivers were issued citations because a child in their vehicle was not secured in a child’s safety seat.
-4 drivers was also cited for not having a driver’s license
-6 drivers were also cited for not having insurance
-8 drivers was arrested for DUI
Drivers are reminded that “Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving”. They are also reminded that all persons within a vehicle are required to be wearing appropriate safety restraints.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office has successfully completed their share of the "Joining Forces" DUI Enforcement Campaign. "Joining Forces" is a multi-jurisdictional law enforcement program that promotes statewide enforcement in four areas: DUI, seat belts, and speed and pedestrian safety.
The Sheriff's Office joined the Sparks Police Department, Reno Police Department, University of Nevada Police Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol in this enforcement campaign.
Sheriff's Office personnel assigned to this campaign initiated 273 traffic stops and arrested 10 drivers for DUI. Additionally, of the 273 traffic stops, there were 6 drug related arrests, 8 fugitives from justice arrests, 77 drivers cited for speeding and 37 drivers license associated violations. Registration, equipment, other moving violations, seat belt and no insurance violations totaled 141. Twelve (12) drivers were cited for using a cell phone. All other miscellaneous citations and warnings totaled 97.
Although a driver may be stopped for one violation, during the deputy's investigation, several other violations could be discovered. One driver may perhaps be issued a citation for numerous violations.
Even though the "Joining Forces" DUI Enforcement Campaign time period has ended, law enforcement personnel nationwide will continue patrolling roadways and neighborhoods to ensure public safety and security.
The "Joining Forces" DUI Enforcement Campaign was made possible by grant funding received from the Nevada Department of Public Safety - Office of Traffic Safety and the "Joining Forces" Program.
